If you're going to treat yourself to any luxury purchase, then one that improves your sleep health and, therefore, overall mental and physical health, is probably the best bet. This year's best luxury mattresses combine the highest-quality materials, like wool, cotton, latex and high-density memory foam, with innovative designs aimed to maximize back support and cushioning comfort. So, no matter if you're a side sleeper, back sleeper, hot sleeper or share with a restless partner, there'll be an option that optimizes your rest.

We've tested this year's best mattresses for all sleepers, sleeping on them for weeks and assessing their performance. So now, our panel of expert mattress testers (with nearly 5 years of experience) have curated this guide with our top picks of the crème de la crème of luxury mattresses that suit every budget, sleep need and style. And you don't have to break the bank to enjoy them. With mattress deals running throughout the year, like the upcoming Memorial Day mattress sales, you'll be able to get the bed of your dreams for less. Our top pick? The Saatva Classic, a luxury hybrid bed that's world renowned. But more on that below...

Reasons to buy

+

+

+
Cushioning feel
+

Reasons to avoid

-

-
A little motion transfer

Quick summary

The Saatva Classic is our top-rated luxury mattress on the market today because it offers the perfect balance of strong back support and indulgent cushioning comfort. This award-winning innerspring hybrid combines a plush 3" pillow-top for cushioning plus two layers of coils to deliver sturdy support with a little bounce. There isn't loads of foam here – a thin layer provides extra lumbar support in the middle third of the mattress, and you'll also find it around the perimeter, to bolster edge support.

We tested the Luxury Firm version (rated a 5-7 out of 10 on firmness) and found it enormously comfortable from the off. It was slightly firmer than we were expecting but it delivered plenty of cushioning with ample support. Our diverse range of testers (including front sleepers, back sleepers, side sleepers and those with back pain) all found this mattress to suit their way of sleeping which is why it earns our title of best luxury mattress. However, this is a mattress you sleep on top of rather than sinking into. So, if you're looking for that full memory foam 'hug', check out the Tempur-Pedic (#5).

2. The best affordable luxury mattress

A Saatva alternative mattress with a luxury feel at a mid-range price

Specifications

Type: Hybrid
Firmness (1-10): 6.5 (we rate it 8)
Height: 12"
Trial: 365 nights
Warranty: Lifetime
Price (MSRP): From $349

Reasons to buy

+
A luxury feel for less
+
Both supportive and pressure-relieving
+
Doesn't trap heat

Reasons to avoid

-
Only one firmness option
-
Will be too firm for some

Quick summary

If you're looking for a slightly less decadent, more budget-friendly model, check out the DreamCloud. This mattress tops our best affordable mattress list, and while it's not as luxurious as others in our ranking, it manages to deliver a pretty high-end feel for its mid-range price. We think it's a suitable alternative to the Saatva Classic at the top of this list if you can't stretch your budget quite as far.

DreamCloud rates its mattress as a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, but our testers thought it was closer to an 8. Despite its firmer feel, the DreamCloud boasts excellent pressure relief, which helped our testers with lower back and hip pain feel more at ease. Back and stomach sleepers should get on with it – and with a weight capacity of up to 1,000 lbs, it's a good mattress for heavy sleepers, too. However, strict side sleepers, especially those who are lighter, might prefer the softer Helix Midnight Luxe (#3) instead, which is designed to contour more around the hips, shoulders and knees (anywhere that pressure can build up.)

3. The best luxury mattress for side sleepers

Luxuriously tall with sumptuous support for side sleepers

Specifications

Type: Hybrid
Firmness (1-10): 5-6
Height: 13.5"
Trial: 100 nights
Warranty: 15-year limited
Price (MSRP): From $1,436.25
Price (sale): From $1,149

Reasons to buy

+
Plush pressure relief for side sleeping
+
Excellent motion isolation
+
Luxurious pillow-top
+
Enhanced lumbar support

Reasons to avoid

-
Too soft for stomach sleepers
-
No handles for moving

Quick summary

Side sleepers seeking a luxurious bedtime experience should check out the Helix Midnight Luxe, which tops our best side sleeper mattress guide. It has a medium feel and contours around the sleeper's shoulders and hips in a side-lying position, keeping them comfortably cushioned to prevent pressure from building up. We've chosen this mattress for our 3rd spot because as well as support and comfort, it remains cool, helping sleepers regulate their temperature. The Tempur-Pedic mattress that sits just below the Helix in this guide at #4 has a tendency to trap a little heat, because of its all foam design.

Although this is marketed as a side sleeper's mattress, our testing panel also felt comfortable when resting on their backs. However, we don't recommend it for stomach sleepers as it's too soft to support that position properly. The DreamCloud (#2) or the firmest versions of the Saatva (#1) or WinkBed (#6) would be better.

4. The best luxury mattress for pressure relief

World-renowned Tempur memory foam relieves pressure for back sleepers in this luxury bed

Specifications

Type: All-foam (also available in hybrid)
Firmness (1-10): Medium-firm (we rate it 7.5)
Height: 11-13"
Trial: 90 nights
Warranty: 10 years
Price (MSRP): From $1,699

Reasons to buy

+
Deep pressure relief
+
Great for back sleepers
+
Excellent motion isolation

Reasons to avoid

-
Short trial period
-
Can trap body heat

Quick summary

Hybrids dominate the luxury mattress market, but perhaps you want a high-end memory foam mattress that hugs you to sleep. Our choice here is the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt mattress, which features the brand's famous Tempur material to cushion your joints and relieve pressure. During our tests, our reviewers all agreed that it's most comfortable for back sleeping, which is why we've decided to place it just below the Helix Midnight Luxe (#3) which suits multiple sleeping styles.

The Tempur-Adapt delivers outstanding motion isolation, too, which makes it a great choice for couples who don't want to wake up to their partner's movements. Despite the open-cell design of the Tempur Material and a cooling cover, it slept too warm for our lead tester. So, if you're a naturally hot sleeper but still love the memory foam feel, consider the GhostBed Luxe mattress (#8). This will deliver that slow-moving foam sink and it scored 5 out of 5 for temperature regulation in our review.

5. The best luxury mattress for back pain

A specialist orthopedic mattress that soothes back pain with a luxurious finish

Specifications

Type: Hybrid
Firmness (1-10): Supportive plush (we rate it 7.5)
Height: 15"
Trial: 365 nights
Warranty: Lifetime
Price (MSRP): From $1,999
Price (sale): From $1,599

Reasons to buy

+
Tailored for chronic back and joint pain
+
Sturdy edges to sit on or sleep against
+
Includes free in-home delivery

Reasons to avoid

-
Not as customizable as the Classic
-
Could be too high for some people

Quick summary

The Saatva RX is a specialist mattress designed for sleepers with chronic back and joint conditions. While the top-ranked Saatva Classic has a Lumbar Zone and a plush Euro top to help ease aches, the Saatva RX takes it to a whole new level with foam modules and microcoils that adapt to your movements. These components help minimize pressure points, enhance circulation, and draw away body heat – all necessary elements to reduce discomfort during sleep.

Our lead tester with lower back pain and mild scoliosis slept on a Saatva RX for one month and found it delivers a keen balance of firm support and comforting pressure relief. It doesn't retain much heat, either, and the firmer caliper spring coils surrounding the perimeter yield strong, sturdy edges to sit on. However, at 15" tall, it could be difficult for individuals with limited mobility to get in or out of bed. If you need a shorter mattress but still want the pain relief benefits, opt for the WinkBed (#6). It's included in our best mattress for back pain guide thanks to its 3-Step Back Relief system and it's more manageable at 13.5 inches tall.

6. The best luxury mattress for heavy people

A luxury hybrid engineered to support plus-sized sleepers

Specifications

Type: Hybrid
Firmness (1-10): 6.5-8
Height: 13.5"
Trial: 120 nights
Warranty: Lifetime
Price (MSRP): From $1,349
Price (sale): From $1,049

Reasons to buy

+
Sturdy, zoned support for the lumbar
+
Third-party tested for durability
+
Supportive right to the edge

Reasons to avoid

-
Heavy to set up
-
Not the highest weight limit

Quick summary

The WinkBed Plus is a version of the original WinkBed that adds latex, anti-sag foam, and stronger coils to support plus-sized sleepers. We rate it the best mattress for heavy people overall. Aside from this, it's a luxury bed that uses high-quality materials to deliver both fantastic support and a comfortable surface.

WinkBed rates its Plus model as an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale (firm), but notes that sleepers over 300lbs might find it closer to a 6 out of 10 (medium). It has a maximum weight limit of 900lbs (450lbs per side), which is slightly less than the DreamCloud (#2). However, the WinkBed Plus is specifically designed for larger sleepers and has been third-party tested for durability.

7. The best organic luxury mattress

A luxe eco-friendly hybrid made with certified organic materials

Specifications

Type: Latex hybrid
Firmness (1-10): 7, 6, or 4
Height: 11", 13", or 15.5"
Trial: 365 nights
Warranty: 25 years
Price (MSRP): From $1,399

Reasons to buy

+
Three firmness levels
+
Good for hot sleepers
+
Vegan option available

Reasons to avoid

-
Firmness levels vary by price
-
Cost $99 to return

Quick summary

The Avocado Green is a luxury mattress made with certified organic materials (latex, cotton, and wool) and pocketed coils arranged in seven ergonomic zones. The base model, which our testers reviewed, has a firm surface that provides excellent support and pressure relief for back and stomach sleepers. For side and combi sleepers, upgrading to a pillow-top (medium) or box-top (plush) will add extra cushioning and height.

The combination of springs and naturally breathable materials helps with airflow so you won't overheat. It's also a solid choice for larger sleepers, with a weight capacity of 700lbs. However, the emphasis on quality organic materials and sustainable practices results in a higher cost, and adding a pillow-top or box-top can nearly double the price. If you want a luxury feel, pillow-top mattress and you haven't got your heart set on organic, opt for the Helix Midnight Luxe (#3) instead.

8. The best cooling luxury mattress

Plush foam comfort combined with cutting edge cooling tech

Specifications

Type: Foam
Firmness (1-10): 6
Height : 13"
Trial: 101 nights
Warranty: 25 years
Price (MSRP): From $2,595
Price (sale): From $1,298

Reasons to buy

+
Superb temperature regulation
+
Excellent motion isolation
+
Great pressure relief for side sleepers

Reasons to avoid

-
Too plush for back/stomach sleeping
-
Firmness changes with temperature

Quick summary

The GhostBed Luxe is included in our best cooling mattress guide, thanks to its combination of cutting-edge cooling technology and luxurious comfort. It's a medium-plush memory foam mattress with layers of cooling foams and a heat-dissipating cover to prevent overheating. In fact, our lead tester had to put on socks and pants some nights because of how powerful this cooling mattress is. We've placed this below our other memory foam pick, the Tempur Adapt (#4) because it's not as supportive for those sleeping on their back and stomach.

Our reviewer was also impressed with its high motion isolation and pressure relief level, particularly across the shoulders and hips. Side sleepers will like the GhostBed, but it doesn't distribute weight quite as well for back and stomach sleepers. If you're looking for a cooling bed that's firm enough to support you on your back, opt for the DreamCloud hybrid mattress (#2.)

9. Best luxury mattress for couples

A handcrafted organic all-latex mattress that excels for co-sleeping

Specifications

Type: Latex
Firmness (1-10): 'Natural firm' (we rate it a 6.5)
Height : 8" or 10"
Trial: 120 nights
Warranty: 20 years
Price (MSRP): From $2,915
Price (sale): From $2,186

Reasons to buy

+
Available in 8" or 10" height
+
Strong edges and motion isolation
+
Removable, washable cover

Reasons to avoid

-
Very expensive
-
Lower profile than most

Quick summary

The Essentia Stratami is an organic mattress that comes in an 8" or 10" height. (For most adults, we'd suggest the latter.) Similar to the Avocado Green (#8), the Stratami uses organic materials including GOLS-certified latex and GOTS-certified cotton. Although it lacks springs, our testers found it quite responsive and supportive, especially for back sleeping.

We rate the Essentia Stratami as the best luxury mattress for couples because of its excellent motion isolation and sturdy edges. Plus, its medium-firm feel will appeal to most positions and body types, although some side sleepers may want a mattress that's a touch more plush to cushion their joints. It's certainly the most indulgent purchase, which is why we've placed it last. It's price point means it's simply not suitable for many buyers, but that doesn't mean it's not an impressive bed.

How we test the best luxury mattress

Our mattress review process is editorially independent, which means that the mattresses included in our buying guides do so on merit and not due the influence of third parties. Our expert mattress testers sleep on each mattress for at least three weeks (roughly how long it takes for your body to get used to a new mattress) and then rate the mattress out of 10 across several key areas, including comfort, temperature regulation and motion isolation.

Mattress firmness and comfort is subjective, so each lead reviewer also forms a trusted and experienced testing panel made up of people with different sleep needs and body types. We have side sleepers, back sleepers and stomach sleepers, with lighter, average and heavier bodies, who rate each mattress using a specific set of performance criteria.

Together, these processes enable us to produce accurate, well-balanced and data-backed mattress reviews, to help you decide whether the mattress you like the look of is the best choice for you. If you'd like more information on our testing process, you can read our full mattress methodology.

Best luxury mattress FAQs

How much does a luxury mattress cost?

There’s a lot to take into consideration before buying a luxury mattress, especially if you’re spending more money than you normally would. Before completing your purchase, think carefully about your current sleeping situation; do you (or anyone you share a bed with) suffer from any aches or pains upon waking? Do you find that you wake frequently during the night because you have overheated? Do you wake up every time your partner rolls over? Does the edge of your mattress dip and collapse if you sleep too near the edge?

Knowing what works (and irks) about your current sleep set-up will help narrow down what you are looking for in a new luxury mattress. Next, look for a mattress with a long free trial period (the Saatva, DreamCloud and Avocado Green all offer a 365 nights trial period) in order to test your mattress over a long period of time, to ensure that it is the right purchase for you.

Which mattresses do hotels use?

There’s no doubt that hotels use the most luxurious mattresses. What else could give that specific indulgent hotel sleep? The top hotels around the world use an array of mattresses. Usually, their picks have a medium-firm feel to suit all sleeping styles and they’ll be of exceptionally high quality to offer superior comfort and support time and time again, while remaining durable.

Our guide to the mattresses hotels use documents each major hotel chain and the beds they buy. But we also include a more affordable but still luxury option, so you can recreate hotel-quality at home. For example, The Westin Hotel uses the Westin Heavenly Bed, designed just for their hotels. But if you want to match the feel of this hotel, we recommend opting for the WinkBed.

Are luxury mattresses worth it?

While some luxury mattresses sit in the more mid-range price bracket, and some even classed as affordable, the majority will have a premium price tag to reflect the high quality materials and build. So, is it really worth investing in a luxury mattress?

We say, yes. If you’re going to invest in anything, your sleep should be a priority. A good mattress doesn’t just offer comfort, it also offers a good night’s sleep and support for your body, and both contribute to your overall wellness. Better sleep means better health. Alongside this, a luxury mattress has the potential to last double the lifespan of a budget mattress, meaning in the long-run, you’ll likely save money by investing slightly more in the beginning.

However, you don’t need to invest much. It’s important to always stick to what you can afford, which is why we’ve included a luxury mattress option for many different budgets.
