The most customizable of any mattress in this list, the Saatva Classic is available in three mattress firmness options and two different depths. For maximum luxury, opt for the thicker version of the two (14.5 inches). The weight capacity is just above average at 600lbs. There isn't officially a 'bigger bodies' option, but the Saatva HD has a very similar design with a weight capacity of 1,000lbs. However, the DreamCloud (#2 on this list) also supports up to 1,000lbs yet costs much less than the Saatva.
During our year-long review, we slept on a queen-size luxury firm Saatva Classic. In our tests, the Saatva Classic scored highly on edge support and pressure relief, although you might experience some slight motion transfer if you opt for the softest version. This mattress should stand the test of time, too. After a full year of sleeping on the Saatva Classic, our reviewer commented that it still held up in terms of support and pressure point relief.
We also consider Saatva Classic one of the best mattresses for back pain because of its sturdy edges, customizable height, and focus on lumbar support. The center of the mattress features specialized quilting, a high-density memory foam lumbar crown, and firmer coils. 2. The best affordable luxury mattress

If you're looking for a slightly less decadent, more budget-friendly model, check out the DreamCloud. This mattress tops our best affordable mattress list, and while it's not as luxurious as others in our ranking, it manages to deliver a pretty high-end feel for its mid-range price. We think it's a suitable alternative to the Saatva Classic at the top of this list if you can't stretch your budget quite as far.
DreamCloud rates its mattress as a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, but our testers thought it was closer to an 8. Despite its firmer feel, the DreamCloud boasts excellent pressure relief, which helped our testers with lower back and hip pain feel more at ease. Back and stomach sleepers should get on with it – and with a weight capacity of up to 1,000 lbs, it's a good mattress for heavy sleepers, too. However, strict side sleepers, especially those who are lighter, might prefer the softer Helix Midnight Luxe (#3) instead, which is designed to contour more around the hips, shoulders and knees (anywhere that pressure can build up.)

The DreamCloud is the most affordable model in the DreamCloud range. But its build quality and competitive price has earned it a spot in our best hybrid mattress buyer's guide. This 12-inch-tall mattress features a mix of memory foam, foam, and wrapped steel coils. It's topped with a quilted cashmere blend cover that's soft and breathable.
Among our testing panel, our larger back and stomach sleepers were the most comfortable on the DreamCloud's firmer surface. One of our back sleepers with lumbar pain liked how the top layers of foam contoured his lower back for near-instant relief, while the stomach sleeper in our group didn't feel his hips dip below the rest of his body. Our smaller side sleepers needed time to settle into the DreamCloud but found it comfortable once they had. (DreamCloud offers a one-year trial, but we realize that everyone isn't so patient.)
Temperature regulation was another standout feature, as our testers didn't overheat once. It's not a dedicated cooling mattress like the GhostBed Luxe (#8) but the coils and cashmere-blend cover of the DreamCloud should help most people sleep temperature-neutral. The DreamCloud aced our drop tests, too, indicating that you're unlikely to feel your partner's movements if they toss and turn or wake up before you do.
However, edge support was lacking for our review model, particularly for our larger testers. On the other hand, we were impressed by how durable the DreamCloud otherwise seemed. Customers who left glowing reviews for the mattress mentioned that the bed left no visible compression points where they slept and noted after four years of sleeping on the bed that they 'woke up feeling refreshed every day'.
What we like about it...
✅ Supports up to 1,000lbs: The DreamCloud is a better option for heavier sleepers compared to the Saatva Classic since it can support up to 500 lbs per side. Its firmer feel is also better suited for larger people.
✅ Good for back and hip pain: Our testers with back and hip pain found immediate relief when sleeping on the DreamCloud. Its subtle pressure relief relieves tension in problem areas while its firm surface promotes proper alignment.
✅ Doesn't trap heat: Our lead tester didn't overheat once during her testing period. Another member of our panel was so comfortable on the DreamCloud that he immediately fell asleep on it – and was pleasantly surprised when he didn't wake up in a sweat, as he often does.
What we don't like about it...
❌ Lacking in edge support: Despite its above-average weight capacity, the edges of the DreamCloud weren't sturdy enough for the larger testers in our panel. This shouldn't be an issue for small to average bodies, but if edge support is a priority for you as a heavier individual, consider the WinkBed (#6).
❌ Too firm for petite bodies: Our lead tester is an average-sized side sleeper and needed time to break in the DreamCloud. While her patience paid off, many smaller side and back sleepers might not have the same luck. Consider a mattress with a softer touch, like the Helix Midnight Luxe (#4).

DreamCloud mattresses are available to buy online from DreamCloud Direct and its Amazon storefront. Ignore the MSRP, as there's an evergreen DreamCloud mattress sale that cuts up to 50% off. Disregard the countdown banners, too, as this offer has stuck around since Presidents' Day last year and doesn't appear to be ending any time soon.
The current sale price of a queen-size DreamCloud hybrid mattress is $699, but we have seen that drop to $665 before during major sale events. That's a fantastic value, especially considering the one-year trial, free returns, and lifetime warranty that are included.
While we don't expect the DreamCloud to drop in price significantly in the upcoming Memorial Day sales, May is still a good time to buy, because you'll likely get some good freebies. Right now, you can get $599 of free bedding included in your purchase.
3. The best luxury mattress for side sleepers
Quick summary
Side sleepers seeking a luxurious bedtime experience should check out the Helix Midnight Luxe, which tops our best side sleeper mattress guide. It has a medium feel and contours around the sleeper's shoulders and hips in a side-lying position, keeping them comfortably cushioned to prevent pressure from building up. We've chosen this mattress for our 3rd spot because as well as support and comfort, it remains cool, helping sleepers regulate their temperature. The Tempur-Pedic mattress that sits just below the Helix in this guide at #4 has a tendency to trap a little heat, because of its all foam design.
Although this is marketed as a side sleeper's mattress, our testing panel also felt comfortable when resting on their backs. However, we don't recommend it for stomach sleepers as it's too soft to support that position properly. The DreamCloud (#2) or the firmest versions of the Saatva (#1) or WinkBed (#6) would be better.

Our review: In more detail
The Helix Midnight Luxe is a 13.5" hybrid with a quilted pillow-top that amps up the luxury in both look and feel. Beneath that are premium memory foam layers that gently cradle your joints, followed by a bed of coils that are firmer in the center to support your hips and lumbar. There are also firmer springs around the perimeter for edge support.
Our lead tester, who often experiences a 'dead hip' while side sleeping, didn't have that issue at all when sleeping on the Helix Midnight Luxe. The cloud-like comfort of the pillow-top plus the targeted lumbar support allowed her to remain comfortably on her side throughout the night. Her partner, a heavier back sleeper, also felt well-supported on this mattress. (For added lower back support, you can opt for an extra layer of dense 3-zoned foam for an additional $199.)
Aside from being a cozy mattress for side sleepers, the Helix Midnight Luxe does many of the little things well, too. The edges are sturdy and there's low motion transfer, so it's a good choice for couples who share a bed. The Tencel cover does a good job of wicking away moisture but hot sleepers should consider an upgrade to the GlacioTex Cooling Cover ($199), which feels soothing to the touch.
Our tester’s main gripe about this mattress is that it doesn't have side handles, which makes both setup and rotating the mattress more challenging. (Regularly rotating your mattress can help extend its lifespan by minimizing wear and tear.) To make setup easier, see if Helix offers White Glove Delivery in your area. Unlike Saatva (#1) or Tempur-Pedic (#5), this service will require an additional fee.
What we like about it...
✅ Also comfortable for back sleeping: If you're a back sleeper who doesn't need a decidedly firm mattress, the Midnight Luxe may be just as supportive for you. (Our tester's back-sleeping partner was comfortable on this mattress.) This also bodes well if you're a side/back combi sleeper as you're less likely to compromise comfort.
✅ Loads of pressure relief: Side sleepers, in particular, need a mattress that provides ample cushioning for the shoulders, hips, and knees to stop pressure from building. The Midnight Luxe delivers with its quilted pillow-top, responsive foam layers, and softer coils positioned near the shoulders and knees to ease joint pressure.
✅ Upgrades available: Granted these will increase the Midnight Luxe's already-premium price, but whether you're a very hot sleeper or suffer from back pain, it's nice to have the flexibility to tailor this mattress to your needs.
What we don't like about it...
❌ No side handles: Without side handles, it's tricky to maneuver this tall, heavy hybrid mattress. (A queen-size weighs 120lbs.) You can upgrade to White Glove Delivery to help with setup, but it costs extra and is only available in select areas.
❌ Short trial for the price: A 100-night trial is certainly enough time to adjust to a new mattress, but the comparatively-priced Saatva (#1) and mid-range DreamCloud (#2) offer a whole year for you to decide.

Two primary Helix mattress sales run throughout the year. There's a standard offer that cuts 20% off and adds a free pair of Helix Dream pillows. That drops the price of a queen-size Helix Midnight Luxe to $1,899 (from $2,373.)
Then there are the holiday sales. Last year, we saw 30% off plus two free pillows during Helix's Memorial Day and July 4th mattress sales in 2024 – and we think that's likely to return for the upcoming Memorial Day sales in May. During our tests, our reviewers all agreed that it's most comfortable for back sleeping, which is why we've decided to place it just below the Helix Midnight Luxe (#3) which suits multiple sleeping styles.
The Tempur-Adapt delivers outstanding motion isolation, too, which makes it a great choice for couples who don't want to wake up to their partner's movements. Despite the open-cell design of the Tempur Material and a cooling cover, it slept too warm for our lead tester. So, if you're a naturally hot sleeper but still love the memory foam feel, consider the GhostBed Luxe mattress (#8). This will deliver that slow-moving foam sink and it scored 5 out of 5 for temperature regulation in our review.

Our review: In more detail
A new version of the Tempur-Adapt was released last year, with a reformulated Tempur Material that purportedly delivers deeper pressure relief. However, it otherwise has the same construction as before. Our lead tester reviewed the previous model went hands-on with the updated Tempur-Adapt and didn't notice a significant change in performance.
The slow-moving foams of the Tempur-Adapt mattress will hug every contour of your body to relieve pressure in your back and joints. Despite this sinkage, it's also quite supportive. The Tempur-Adapt's best qualities were on full display when members of our testing panel slept on their backs. The stomach sleepers in our group also felt comfortable, but side sleeping was a mixed bag as our testers either found it too firm around their shoulders, or too soft along their hips. For strict side sleepers, the Helix Midnight Luxe (#3) might be a better fit.
All-foam mattresses excel at limiting motion transfer, and the Tempur-Adapt aced our drop tests. It absorbed nearly every movement we threw at it, which bodes well for co-sleepers. While our combi-sleeping testers didn't feel 'stuck' in this mattress, Tempur Material does take a moment to snap back into place so you'll need to give it time to mold to your new position.
Surprisingly, the Tempur-Adapt offers limited options for customizing your comfort level. Choose between the standard (medium) all-foam construction and a medium hybrid, which adds over 1,000 spring coils. The Tempur-Adapt hybrid will give the mattress a bouncier feel while enhancing airflow and edge support, two areas where the all-foam Tempur-Adapt fell short in our tests. Regardless, if you tend to sleep very hot, consider the GhostBed (#8) or the Aurora Luxe (#4), both of which are packed with advanced cooling materials
What we like about it...
✅ Body-hugging support for back sleepers: All of our testers agreed that the Tempur-Adapt was most comfortable in a back-lying position. Even those who naturally prefer side or stomach sleeping found that lying on their backs provided optimal pressure relief for their lumbar and joints.

What we don't like about it...
❌ Traps heat: The Tempur-Adapt's cooling cover didn't do much to prevent heat buildup, and our lead tester woke up in a sweat several times. For an all-foam bed that's remarkably cooling, look at the GhostBed (#8).
❌ Underwhelming extras: Free White Glove Delivery aside, Tempur-Pedic only offers a 90-night trial and a 10-year warranty, which pales in comparison to most of its rivals. Returns aren't free, either.
When, where and how to buy
The Tempur-Adapt is the least expensive model in the current Tempur-Pedic lineup after the Tempur-Cloud mattress-in-a-box. A queen-size Tempur-Adapt retails for $2,199 (or $2,499 for the medium hybrid version).
Honestly, you're paying in part for the Tempur-Pedic brand name. The Tempur feel is fairly unique though, and the people who love it, really love it. If you're sold on that, it could be worth the investment – but you'll want to be smart about when to buy. Tempur-Pedic mattress sales usually appear during major holidays and feature as much as $300 off the Tempur-Adapt. We expect to see the best prices of the year in May for Memorial Day, so if you're in no rush it's worth waiting until we see these discounts applied.
Unlike most of the options on this list. Tempur-Pedic is available from several authorized third-party resellers like Amazon, Macy's, and Pottery Barn. While shopping around might land you bigger savings, prices are generally consistent. We recommend purchasing directly from Tempur-Pedic for easier aftercare.
5. The best luxury mattress for back pain

Our lead tester with lower back pain and mild scoliosis slept on a Saatva RX for one month and found it delivers a keen balance of firm support and comforting pressure relief. However, at 15" tall, it could be difficult for individuals with limited mobility to get in or out of bed. Our review: In more detail
The Saatva RX comes in one firmness level, which the brand calls 'supportive plush.' (Our testing panel says it's medium-firm.) A Therapeutic Support Core of 8" wrapped coils and 2" foam modules cradle your body to alleviate pressure points and improve circulation. There's also a 1" gel memory foam lumbar crown and a bed of 1" microcoils nestled between a pair of 3/4" layers of high-density foam for relief, support, and adaptability.
Our lead tester noticed a marked improvement in her lower back pain during her month with the Saatva RX. Another member of our panel who has arthritis felt immediate relief in her knees. Overall, our testing group found the Saatva RX most comfortable for back and stomach sleeping, but our petite side sleepers said it was too firm. If that's you, the plush Saatva Classic or the Helix Midnight Luxe (#3) may be better options – and both are much more affordable than the RX.
The dual-coil design helps this mattress breathe, but with that comes some motion transfer. That's not necessarily a bad thing for sleepers with back and joint pain since this helps them change positions more easily. However, it could be an issue if you share the bed with a heavier partner who moves in their sleep a lot. (The Saatva RX is available in a split king if you don't want to feel their movements at all.)

However, if you're purchasing a full-size or larger, it's worth waiting for one of Saatva's holiday sales, as these typically cut 15% off for greater savings. A queen-size Saatva RX mattress, normally priced at $3,295, drops to $2,895 with the $400 discount, but after 15% off it falls to $2,801.
Another way to save on a Saatva RX is to buy it refurbished from a mattress liquidator site. Just know that if you go this route, you'll forfeit the perks that usually come with a Saatva mattress like free White Glove Delivery, a one-year trial, and a lifetime warranty. The WinkBed Plus features a 2.5" layer of pure latex, divided into seven ergonomic zones for targeted relief and support. The coils are banded and reinforced for exceptional durability. Unlike the plush Euro top on the standard WinkBed, the WinkBed Plus is topped with dense, anti-sag foam. All WinkBeds have a moisture-wicking Tencel cover, a LumbarLayer for alignment, and firmer coils along the perimeter.
We tested a luxury firm WinkBed, and it earned high marks across the board, particularly for edge support, motion isolation, and pain relief. While we can't make a direct comparison to the WinkBed Plus due to the different materials, a look at verified customer reviews shows that sleepers find the WinkBed Plus comfortable and durable, with many reporting relief from their back pain.
Temperature regulation with our WinkBed test unit was good, but the WinkBed Plus may perform even better here thanks to its pure latex layer, which is more breathable than memory foam. We found the Tencel cover, present on all WinkBed models, to be soft and breathable.
The WinkBed is a close competitor to the Saatva Classic (#1), but with a max weight capacity of 600lbs, the Saatva Classic isn't supportive enough for heavy bodies. You could spend less on the DreamCloud (#2), which has a 1,000lb weight limit – but the WinkBed Plus is specifically designed for heavier sleepers and has been third-party tested for durability, offering added peace of mind.
What we like about it
✅ Outstanding relief and support: The WinkBed Plus has 3-zoned support coils, LumbarLayer foam, and a pure latex layer with seven ergonomic zones. These components promote alignment and provide targeted pressure relief, addressing the chronic back and joint pain that a lot of people with heavier bodies deal with.
✅ Strong edges: During our tests, the luxury firm WinkBed felt secure when sitting on or lying against the edge. The banded coils in the WinkBed Plus are likely to provide even stronger edge support, which will also prevent premature sagging.
✅ Third-party tested for durability: WinkBed subjects the WinkBed Plus to simulations of 20 years of use by a 350lb sleeper, ensuring that it remains sturdy and supportive for larger bodies without significant wear and tear.
What we don't like about it
❌ A heavy bed to handle: A queen-size WinkBed Plus weighs 135lbs, and there's no White Glove Delivery option available. If you can't maneuver this mattress alone, ask someone to help you set it up.
❌ Not the highest weight limit out there: The WinkBed Plus is an excellent luxury mattress for larger bodies, but there are models out there that can support as much as 1,100lbs. The DreamCloud (#2) has a max weight capacity of 1,000lbs.

7. The best organic luxury mattress

The Avocado Green is a luxury mattress made with certified organic materials (latex, cotton, and wool) and pocketed coils arranged in seven ergonomic zones. The base model, which our testers reviewed, has a firm surface that provides excellent support and pressure relief for back and stomach sleepers. For side and combi sleepers, upgrading to a pillow-top (medium) or box-top (plush) will add extra cushioning and height.
The combination of springs and naturally breathable materials helps with airflow so you won't overheat. It's also a solid choice for larger sleepers, with a weight capacity of 700lbs. However, the emphasis on quality organic materials and sustainable practices results in a higher cost, and adding a pillow-top or box-top can nearly double the price. If you want a luxury feel, pillow-top mattress and you haven't got your heart set on organic, opt for the Helix Midnight Luxe (#3) instead.

Instead of memory or polyfoam, the Avocado Green Mattress has a 2" certified organic Dunlop latex comfort layer that gently cradles your body while providing a buoyant, responsive feel. The pocketed coils are arranged in seven ergonomic zones, offering targeted support for your hips, back, and shoulders. The reinforced steel perimeter delivers excellent edge support; our testers could sit or lie comfortably near the edges without feeling like they might fall off.
The Avocado Green is a medium-firm mattress with minimal give that our testers found most comfortable for back and stomach sleeping yet not plush enough for side sleeping. For more pressure relief, upgrade to a medium pillow-top that adds two more inches of Dunlop latex, or a plush box-top that includes 3" of soft Pure Talalay latex. However, these are pricey add-ons for an already expensive mattress. If you’re a side sleeper with a tighter budget, we recommend the Helix Midnight Luxe (#3).
Although it’s not a dedicated cooling mattress, the Avocado Green is one of our top beds for hot sleepers. Our lead tester, who's prone to overheating, maintained a comfortable temperature throughout the night thanks to the organic cotton and wool cover, natural latex layer, and pocket coils. The Avocado Green mattress also excels at motion isolation despite its bouncy feel, although we can't say for sure if the box-top or pillow-top add-ons would negatively impact this.
There's a lot to like about the Avocado Green Mattress, and knowing that you're buying from a company that prioritizes environmental safety and ethical labor practices should make you feel good, too. It's one of the most expensive options on our list, especially if you opt for the pillow-top or box-top, but we think you'll get your money's worth.
What we like about it...

✅ Support for heavy bodies: While it's not on the level of the WinkBed Plus (#7) or DreamCloud (#8), the Avocado Green Mattress boasts an above-average weight capacity of up to 700 lbs.
✅ Built for cooler sleep: The natural breathability of organic cotton, wool, and latex, combined with the airflow provided by the open coils, makes the Avocado Green Mattress one of the best mattresses for hot sleepers.
What we don't like about it...
❌ Costly upgrades: Side sleepers and lightweight sleepers may prefer the comfort of a box-top or pillow-top, but these upgrades can nearly double the final price. Meanwhile, standard shipping is free but White Glove Delivery adds at least $249.
❌ No free returns: Be prepared to pay if you decide to send your Avocado Green Mattress back at any point during your one-year trial. Returns cost $99.
When, where and how to buy
Purchase Avocado Green mattresses online at Avocado or from authorized retailers like Raymour & Flanigan, Living Spaces, and HOM Furniture. Avocado has over a dozen showrooms in select metro areas across the US where you can see the mattresses up close and speak to an Avocado team member for advice.
Avocadio normally takes 10% or $200 off its flagship mattress during mattress sales, but you will occasionally see a 15% discount, particularly around major sales events. Usually, Avocado reserves its deepest discounts for its luxury models, with up to 20% off or $400 off. This applies to the box-top and pillow-top upgrades for the Avocado Green Mattress, which have been as much as 20% off.
While we can't predict the discount, we're likely to see a decent sale on this mattress in May for Memorial Day.
8. The best cooling luxury mattress
Quick summary
The GhostBed Luxe is included in our best cooling mattress guide, thanks to its combination of cutting-edge cooling technology and luxurious comfort. It's a medium-plush memory foam mattress with layers of cooling foams and a heat-dissipating cover to prevent overheating. In fact, our lead tester had to put on socks and pants some nights because of how powerful this cooling mattress is. We've placed this below our other memory foam pick, the Tempur Adapt (#4) because it's not as supportive for those sleeping on their back and stomach.
Our reviewer was also impressed with its high motion isolation and pressure relief level, particularly across the shoulders and hips. Side sleepers will like the GhostBed, but it doesn't distribute weight quite as well for back and stomach sleepers. If you're looking for a cooling bed that's firm enough to support you on your back, opt for the DreamCloud hybrid mattress (#2.)

Our review: In more detail
The GhostBed Luxe is a 13" memory foam mattress made up of seven layers. The quilted cover is made up of Ghost Ice Fabric, a 1" layer of gel memory foam, and a half-inch of cooling fiber. Underneath, you’ll find the patented Ghost Ice cooling technology meant to absorb and disperse body heat. Following that are two inches of gel memory foam, 2" of bounce foam, and a 7.5" high-density foam base.
Memory foam mattresses are known to trap heat, but this bed's cooling properties make it an outlier in the very best way. We awarded the GhostBed Luxe's cooling properties a 5/5 as our tester never once felt overheated – and at one point had to start sleeping with socks on.
This medium-plush mattress is loaded with pressure relief that'll suit side sleepers in particular. Although it’s advertised as beneficial for back sleepers, our tester discovered that the GhostBed Luxe doesn’t provide enough support for the hips when resting in that position. The Tempur-Adapt (#5) is loaded with slow-moving foam but boasts a medium-firm level of support many back sleepers need.
The GhostBed Luxe also passed our motion transfer and edge support tests with flying colors, but one thing to take into consideration is a possible change in the firmness of the mattress depending on the temperature. GhostBed suggests keeping your bedroom between 65-75 degrees to prevent this from happening, but that's not always feasible. It's the first warning of its type we’ve ever seen on a mattress.
What we like about it
✅ Powerful cooling: GhostBed calls its Luxe mattress the coolest in the world. Indeed, its proprietary cooling materials are impressive, and our tester felt quite chilly at times. More impressive is that it's entirely made of foam.
✅ Top-class motion isolation: If you or your partner toss and turn at night, you'll seldom feel it on the GhostBed Luxe. (However, you might find yourself squirming less at night if overheating was the reason why.)
✅ Comfortable for side sleeping: The GhostBed Luxe is a medium-plush mattress that'll cushion your joints to prevent pressure buildup when sleeping on your side.
What we don't like about it
❌ Temperature impacts materials: According to GhostBed, extreme temperatures can make the materials softer or firmer than intended. This mattress may not work for you if you live anywhere with very hot summers or extremely cold winters.
❌ Too soft for back sleepers: Our tester felt the GhostBed Luxe wasn't as supportive along the hips and shoulders for back sleepers. The Tempur-Adapt (#5) doesn't sleep anywhere near as cool as the GhostBed, but it's a medium-firm mattress that's excellent for back sleeping.
When, where and how to buy
The GhostBed Luxe is available online from GhostBed, where it's been on sale for 50% off indefinitely. (In other words, you don't have to wait for a better sale to come along before you buy.) At MSRP, a queen-size GhostBed Luxe costs $3,095, but it currently sells for $1,548. It comes with two free luxury pillows, too. Currently you can get an extra 10% off the price if you provide your email address.
You can also find the GhostBed Luxe at Target, Home Depot, and Wayfair. It won't hurt to shop around, but the discounts tend to be uniform. In that case, we'd recommend buying straight from GhostBed for the best quality of aftercare (like the impressive 25-year warranty.)
9. Best luxury mattress for couples
Quick summary
The Essentia Stratami is an organic mattress that comes in an 8" or 10" height. (For most adults, we'd suggest the latter.) Similar to the Avocado Green (#8), the Stratami uses organic materials including GOLS-certified latex and GOTS-certified cotton. Although it lacks springs, our testers found it quite responsive and supportive, especially for back sleeping.
We rate the Essentia Stratami as the best luxury mattress for couples because of its excellent motion isolation and sturdy edges. Plus, its medium-firm feel will appeal to most positions and body types, although some side sleepers may want a mattress that's a touch more plush to cushion their joints. It's certainly the most indulgent purchase, which is why we've placed it last. It's price point means it's simply not suitable for many buyers, but that doesn't mean it's not an impressive bed.

This is a luxury mattress in all aspects, from the quality of the materials and beautiful craftsmanship to the astronomically high price tag. A queen retails from $3,509, although you may be able to score 25% off during a rare sale.
Our review: In more detail
Whether you choose the 8" or 10" profile, the Essentia Stratami has four distinct layers. There's a support layer made of GOLS-certified organic latex plus a dome-shaped organic latex foam layer designed for airflow and pressure relief. On top is a removable, machine-washable cover, a rarity among mattresses on this list. Instead of fiberglass, Essentia uses Kevlar as a fire barrier.
Our lead tester found the surface springy, with enough give to gently contour her body. The latex layers helped ease another one of our tester's neck and shoulder pain. While our panel were generally comfortable in any position, they also believe strict side sleepers may prefer a mattress that cushions their joints more profoundly.
A couple of our testers slept together on the Essentia Stratami, with one of them prone to moving around a lot at night. Our other tester didn't feel his movements at all. The Stratami performed well in our drop tests, too – further proof that it's a sound mattress for bed-sharing. The sturdy edges will allow you to sit on the side of the bed comfortably, or safely lay against the edges if your partner is a bed hog.
Build quality and temperature regulation are also ace, but perhaps the biggest downside to the Stratami is the cost. Not only is it an expensive mattress up front, but you'll need to pay a lot to send it back if it's not the right fit. Also, White Glove Delivery is only included with the 10" king-size version; otherwise, it's $249. Latex mattresses are heavy, so unless you have help you'll need to factor that into your budget, too.
What we like about it
✅ Organic materials and beautiful craftsmanship: Essentia sources raw organic ingredients from certified organic, ethical, and fair-trade farms and handcrafts all of its mattresses at its factory in Montreal, Canada.
✅ Couples-friendly design: A medium-firm bed feel should appeal to most types of sleepers, while the edge support will allow you and your co-sleeper to take up as much of the surface as possible. Motion isolation is excellent, too.
✅ Removable, washable cover: It's rare to find a luxury mattress with a cover you can remove and launder. You can pop the Stratami's organic cotton cover in the washing machine, and then air dry.
What we don't like about it
❌ Definitely a splurge: The Essentia Stratami has a high up-front cost, and White Glove Delivery costs an extra $249 for most sizes if you want help setting up this heavy latex mattress. The return fee is 9% of the retail cost.
❌ Lower profiles than most: Although there's a choice of height (8" or 10"), the Stratami isn't as tall as other luxury mattresses.
When, where and how to buy
Essentia is the exclusive retailer of its mattresses and holds sale events during major holidays, usually cutting as much as 25% off and including a free GOTS-certified organic cotton sheet set with purchase.
Prices vary by height, with a queen-size 8" Stratami retailing for $3,509 and a queen-size 10" Stratami going for $4,708. (Note that there is no 10" twin-size mattress.) Because of the high price point, percentage discounts can reduce the cost substantially, so it's worth waiting for Memorial Day, where we expect a decent sale.
