Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders are now open in Australia: Here's what you need to know
Here's how you can secure the upcoming console

Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders have officially opened! Nintendo didn't reveal pricing and availability during the latest Nintendo Direct stream, however, Aussie retailers like JB Hi-Fi and EB Games did open pre-orders in the middle of the night, much to the chagrin of people with day jobs.
Set to release on June 5, 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been priced at AU$699.95 for the standalone Nintendo Switch 2 console. Alternatively, a bundle which includes the console and the newly announced game Mario Kart World will also be available at launch, priced at AU$769.95.
The Switch 2 will initially launch in only one colour, Black, and with 256GB of internal storage. Surprisingly, expandable storage will be supported exclusively through microSD Express cards, not standard microSD cards.
Along with details about the new console, the latest Nintendo Direct event showcased upcoming games, including first-party standouts like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza and Kirby Air Riders. From Software's Elden Ring will also release on Switch 2, along with a new title from the developer titled The Duskbloods.
Additionally, Nintendo revealed that GameCube games like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and F-Zero GX would be coming to Nintendo Switch Online for the Switch 2, along with a new wireless GameCube controller — ideal for when Super Smash Bros. Melee eventually lands on the service.
Given the high levels of anticipation surrounding the release of the Switch 2, and the likelihood that it will sell out quickly, we think it's a good idea to pre-order the console at your earliest convenience.
Nintendo Switch 2: Australian retailers
JB Hi-Fi, EB Games, Big W and The Gamesmen are currently the only Australian retailers to offer pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Each retailer is accepting pre-orders for the standalone Switch 2 console, the Mario Kart World bundle, a selection of games, and accessories including the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, additional Joy-Cons, and the official Switch 2 carry case.
JB Hi-Fi is now taking pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2, with a limit of one unit per customer. The retailer is offering both the standalone model, priced at AU$699, and the Mario Kart World Bundle, priced at AU$769. It's worth noting that JB Hi-Fi takes payment for the console upfront, whether that be paid in one lump sum, or in 4 instalments via Afterpay or PayPal in 4.
EB Games
EB Games is currently taking pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2, with a limit of 1 per customer. You can secure your console by paying a AU$50 deposit now and then pay the remaining balance on or before launch day. The standalone console is priced at AU$699.95, while the Mario Kart World bundle is is priced at AU$769.95.
The Gamesmen
Independent Aussie retailer The Gamesmen has opened its Switch 2 pre-orders, priced at AU$699.95 for the standalone console, and AU$769.95 for the Mario Kart World bundle. Like every other retailer, there's a limit of 1 console per customer. The Gamesmen has noted that the expected shipping date for Switch 2 is June 4, 2025.
Amazon Prime members may want to wait for their Nintendo Switch pre-orders to go live on Amazon due to the retailer's fast delivery and lower than usual prices. That said, Amazon doesn't typically open pre-orders at the same time as more specialised retailers, so we would advise you to check other options first.
Will Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders sell out?
Released in 2017, the current Nintendo Switch has so far sold over 150 million units worldwide, making it the third-highest selling console in history behind the Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2.
Given the console's age and the recent surge of Switch 2 leaks, anticipation for a successor is at fever pitch, and we predict the new console will sell out well before release day— and not just in Australia.
Nevertheless, pre-ordering a unit from major Australian retailers like JB Hi-Fi, EB Games, and Big W is the best way to secure the eagerly awaited Switch 2 console. We recommend keeping an eye on this page for further information, and also monitoring each retailers' online homepages for stock availability.
What to expect from the Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo has a history of innovation, with each new console release often showcasing a unique feature, such as a new control scheme or display function, that shapes the gameplay of its first-party titles.
However, the company is taking a more conservative approach with its latest console — this is the first time in Nintendo's history that it’s used a numerical sequel naming convention for one of its consoles, signalling that the Switch 2 will be an upgraded version of the original Switch, rather than a dramatic reimagining.
And we’re totally cool with that! The current Switch’s graphical capabilities have been outdated since, well, launch, and we’re very excited about the prospect of a new Nintendo console that doesn’t feel like it’s stuck in the past.
The Switch 2, has a redesigned dock, larger display, magnetic Joy-Con controllers and a black, blue and orange colour scheme. Additionally, the updated Joy-Cons now include an optical sensor for mouse-style controls. In terms of Switch 2's specs, the console has an LCD display that's capable of HDR and 120Hz in handheld mode. In docked mode, the Switch 2 will output at 4K resolution.
